Chiefs WR Bowe to play Friday

Wide receiver Dwayne Bowe will play in the Chiefs' third preseason game Friday against Seattle just a week after signing his franchise tender and reporting to camp.

"I will play him some, just give him a couple plays here and there, but I don't think that he's ready to play a full game or anything like that," Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel said.

Crennel said he would wait to see how Bowe does Friday before determining how many snaps he'll play in the preseason finale against Green Bay.

--While Brady Quinn appears to have a firm grasp on the No. 2 quarterback spot over Ricky Stanzi, Crennel isn't ready to announce who Matt Cassel's backup Week 1 will be just yet.

"They both have been close and we want to see what the competition was. The circumstances for both of them have been just a little bit different in the games with who they had been with and things like that, so I'm not ready to say one or the other right now," Crennel said. "After this last game, I said I'd go through this week and then see what it looked like, so we'll be through this week here pretty soon and we'll be at the game and then we'll know."

--Defensive lineman Shaun Smith was released by the Titans and has a history with Crennel, but the Chiefs have not spoken to him yet about signing on as a potential mentor to Dontari Poe.

"Shaun would love to be here, I'm sure, but we've got some guys on the team right now that they've worked pretty good and we feel decent about them, and then we'll have to kind of look at it and see," Crennel said. "I have not talked to Shaun yet, but Shaun might give me a call here shortly, but Shaun is a good guy and I like Shaun a lot. I've had him on two different teams, so we'll see how that plays out as well."
