Cavs' Bynum could be closer to returning

Center Andrew Bynum is progressing in his workouts and might soon start practicing regularly with the Cleveland Cavaliers, according to a report.

Bynum worked with coaches on the court before the Cavaliers' preseason game on Thursday night. The Akron Beacon Journal reported that he is down to his game weight of 285 pounds from more than 300.

The 7-footer watched the first half of the Cavaliers' win over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night at Quicken Loans Arena.

A day earlier, Byrum took part in three-on-three, half-court scrimmages with his teammates. However, he is not cleared yet to return to full practices.

"He looked really good. He's getting more comfortable every time he's playing three-on-three," Cavs center Anderson Varejao said. "I'm not a doctor. He looked good, but I don't know his knees."

Bynum left the Philadelphia 76ers after one season in which he never played because of his knees. He signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the Cavs in the summer.

"They're banging and cutting, defending and rebounding. He looks good," Cavs coach Mike Brown said. "I think he's close. But I'm not a medical guy, I'm not a doctor. I'm waiting for them to tell me."

There is no indication whether Bynum will be cleared in time to play in any of the team's four remaining preseason games.

The Cavs open the regular season on Oct. 30 against the Brooklyn Nets.
