Canadian Open leader Mahan withdraws after wife goes into labor
OAKVILLE, Ontario, Canada -- Hunter Mahan, who held a two-stroke lead after two rounds of the RBC Canadian Open, withdrew minutes before he was scheduled to start the third round when he learned that his wife, Kandi, had gone into labor.
Mahan, who shot 67-64 -- 131, 13-under par for the first two rounds at Glen Abbey Golf Club, immediately headed to the airport to catch a flight home to Dallas to be with his wife, who was not due to give birth for three more weeks.
"I received exciting news a short time ago that my wife Kandi has gone into labor with our first child," Mahan said in a statement released by tournament officials.
"Kandi and I are thrilled about the addition to the Mahan family and we look forward to returning to the RBC Canadian Open in the coming years."
Mahan would have been on the course when he got the news but his starting time was delayed almost an hour and a half because of rain.
Kandi Mahan formerly was a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and also was on the dance team of the Dallas Mavericks.
