A's call up Ross, Wagner
The Oakland A's looked to bolster their pitching staff Tuesday by recalling right-handers Tyson Ross and Neil Wagner from Triple-A Sacramento.
To make room on the roster, the A's optioned right-hander Andrew Carignan and outfielder Collin Cowgill to Sacramento.
Ross was scheduled to start Tuesday night against the Anaheim Angels.
He was 2-1 with a 1.80 ERA in five spring-training starts with Oakland but was designated as one of the A's inactive players during their season-opening trip to Japan. He was optioned to Sacramento, where he went 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA in two starts.
Last year, the 24-year-old Ross was 3-3 with a 2.75 ERA in nine games, including six starts, with Oakland before going on the disabled list in May with a strained left oblique.
Wagner, 28, had appeared in relief three times for Sacramento and was 1-0 with a save and a 5.06 ERA. He did not walk a batter in 5 1/3 innings and struck out eight.
Carignan was 1-1 for the A's with a 6.23 ERA in five relief appearances. Cowgill had seen limited action with Oakland and was 0-for-4 at the plate with three walks.
