Denial. While I don’t know what stage of grief it is, I do know that those in it do have a tough time adjusting to life after the event in question. For Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan, that means waking up now and realizing that this season, it is indeed playoffs or bust for you and the Buffalo Bills.

Though Ryan may deny that such an ultimatum was given to him and general manager Doug Whaley, he will not be able to wiggle his way out of this situation. With such a talented roster on both offense and defense, the playoffs are not only a goal, but an expectation at this point.

Offensive stars Tyrod Taylor, Lesean McCoy, and Sammy Watkins give the Bills one of the most talented offenses in the league. Adding to this is the depth at running back and the skill along the offensive line that gives the team – and Rex Ryan – an offense that should find its place in top third of NFL offenses this season.

On the defensive side of the ball, Rex Ryan is now joined by brother Rob with expectation likely higher for the defense than the offense. Young studs Shaq Lawson and Reggie Ragland combined with veterans Stephon Gilmore and Marcell Dareus give the Bills one heck of a defensive unit for not only the present, but the future as well.

While the New England Patriots will still be the leader in the AFC East, the Bills should manage to find their way to second in the division and into one of the two wildcard spots.

Two games against a rebuilding Miami Dolphins team and two against the New York Jets without a current starting quarterback should give the Bills a chance three division wins.

With ten wins likely the goal for playoff bound teams, the Bills will have some work to do this offseason. Getting their key players back fully healthy and allowing the rookies to integrate into fully into the team will be key to the team’s success.

With much to play for this season, the Buffalo Bills and head coach Rex Ryan are on a deadline. Deliver the Bills and their fans a playoff appearance this season, or find yourself back in the job line next spring.
