The Denver Broncos needed the Kansas City Chiefs to win on Thursday night over the Oakland Raiders if they had hopes of a first-round bye. Well, the Chiefs did their job and did themselves and the Broncos a huge favor.

The Chiefs and Raiders are tied for the AFC West lead at 10-3, but Kansas City owns any tiebreaker now after sweeping the season series. For the Broncos, they basically have to win out and hope the Chiefs lose another game besides their Week 16 matchup.

A Broncos win in Week 16 over K.C. means they split the season series, but the Chiefs also have a better divisional record (4-0, Broncos are 1-3.) So the chances of Denver winning that tiebreaker are next to impossible now.

The Broncos schedule couldn’t get much tougher. They visit the Tennessee Titans, host the New England Patriots, visit the Chiefs then close out Week 17 against the Raiders. The Chiefs now get a nice rest before they host Tennessee next week, followed by a home game against Denver and a road game in San Diego.

Right now, the Broncos AFC West hopes aren’t all that great, but a Raiders victory would have been the final nail in the coffin.

Plus, the Broncos main focus right now should be to hold onto that sixth seed with the Miami Dolphins and Pittsburgh Steelers right behind them.
