Is Brock Osweiler really the man to lead the Houston Texans?

Coming over from the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos, Brock Osweiler has a lot to live up to this season with the Houston Texans. A backup for most of his career, Osweiler had some success last season as the starter for the Broncos before losing the starting job after seven starts to Peyton Manning.

Spending his college career at Arizona State University, Brock Osweiler was drafted by the Broncos during the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft. Spending his first four seasons with Denver, Osweiler’s only real time on the field came this past season when he took over as starter for seven games.

With Peyton Manning’s performance suffering due to injuries, Brock Osweiler was thrust into the spotlight in Denver last season. Playing well for the most part, Osweiler completed 61.3 percent of his passes while also eleven passing touchdowns to his six interceptions.

Suffering an injury against the San Diego Chargers during week 17, Osweiler was replaced by Manning. The rest as they say, is history. With only a partial season of starting games under his belt, Osweiler left the Broncos this past spring, opting to sign a four-year, $72 million contract with the Houston Texans.

With all of the above being said, I cannot say that I am overly confident in the potential that Brock Osweiler brings to the Houston Texans. While he is no doubt a talented quarterback, the contract given to him with the expectations that many have for Osweiler are both too high for the type of player Osweiler is.

The other piece to this puzzle will also be that of how much better the Denver Broncos are than the Houston Texans. Though both teams made the playoffs last season, the Texans came out of the ultra weak AFC South and were blown out at home during the AFC Wildcard game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Though the improved running game should give Osweiler some help this season, he will need to improve his own play if he wants to help continue the growth in Houston. Without some improvement this season including some needed experience as a starter, Osweiler will not be the savior in Houston, potentially giving the team another bust in the quarterback department.
