Brewers' Gomez, Braves' Johnson suspended

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez and Atlanta Braves outfielder Reed Johnson were each suspended one game for their roles in Wednesday's bench-clearing incident at Turner Field, Major League Baseball announced.

The suspensions were scheduled to begin Thursday night and the players can appeal. If either player appeals, then the suspensions will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

Gomez was not in Thursday's lineup against the New York Mets so it appears he will not appeal. Johnson is also not in the Braves' lineup against the Philadelphia Phillies but he is not a regular.

The incident started after Gomez, 27, admired his home run for too long. He did apologize after the game, which Milwaukee won 4-0.

Braves catcher Brian McCann and first baseman Freddie Freeman were fined but not suspended.
