Brewers claim RHP De La Torre off waivers

The Milwaukee Brewers added a relief pitcher to their organization Friday, claiming right-hander Jose De La Torre off waivers from the Boston Red Sox.

De La Torre, 27, was designated for assignment by Boston earlier this week when Clay Buchholz came off the 60-day disabled list. In seven appearances for the Red Sox this year (his first major league action), De La Torre had no decisions and a 6.35 ERA.

In 34 relief outings for Triple-A Pawtucket, De La Torre went 5-1 with one save and a 2.75 ERA.

De La Torre was optioned to rookie-level Helena, where he will be eligible to pitch in the Pioneer League championship series.

The Brewers cleared a spot for De La Torre on their 40-man roster by moving second baseman Rickie Weeks from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. Weeks underwent season-ending surgery on his left hamstring Aug. 15.
