Brewers 4, Mets 2
NEW YORK -- Norichika Aoki led off the game with a homer and Khris Davis hit a two-run homer later in the first inning Friday as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the New York Mets 4-2 in front of an announced crowd of 25,276 at Citi Field.
The Brewers (73-87) won their third in a row and their fifth in their last six games. Milwaukee is 14-11 this month and is assured of a winning month for the first time since April (14-11).
The Mets (73-87) lost their second straight following a 5-1 road trip. New York is 32-47 at home, the second-worst home mark in the National League behind the Cubs (31-50).
Martin Maldonado homered in the seventh for the Brewers' final run.
Aoki and Davis each finished 2-for-4. Davis left after suffering left hamstring and right quad injuries while trying to leg out an infield single in the eighth inning.
Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo battled out of trouble in the sixth inning to ensure he would finish the season with a winning record. Gallardo (12-10) allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out six.
Jim Henderson, the Brewers' fourth pitcher, earned his 28th save with a perfect ninth inning.
Just two Mets got into scoring position in the first five innings against Gallardo before New York built a rally with one out in the sixth.
Lucas Duda singled, went to third on Daniel Murphy's ground-rule double and scored on Justin Turner's infield single. Andrew Brown walked to load the bases before Gallardo struck out Juan Lagares.
Murphy attempted to score the tying run when Gallardo's 1-2 pitch to Travis d'Arnaud bounced and skipped away from catcher Maldonado. But Maldonado picked the ball up, raced back to home and tagged Murphy, who tried leaping over Maldonado.
Lagares had a sacrifice fly in the second inning, while Duda and Turner each had two hits.
Mets starter Carlos Torres (4-6) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits and one walk while striking out seven over six innings. He retired 17 of the final 20 batters he faced.
Aoki homered on Torres' fourth pitch to start a three-run first for the Brewers. Torres then struck out Scooter Gennett, but Gennett reached on a wild pitch. One out later, Davis blasted a homer to left to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Mets got on the board in the second when Turner led off with a single, went to third on Brown's single and scored on Lagares' sacrifice fly.
NOTES: Mets 3B David Wright, who left Thursday's series opener after he was hit in the head by a pitch from Johnny Hellweg, sat out Friday with a sore right thumb suffered as he fell to the ground. Wright passed all concussion tests and is hopeful of playing again this weekend. ... LHP Jonathon Niese will start the season finale on Sunday. ...Brewers SS Jean Segura, who hasn't played since Sept. 18 because of a strained hamstring, could start Saturday. Segura entered Friday tied for the National League lead in stolen bases with the Mets' Eric Young. ... Brewers 3B Aramis Ramirez missed his second straight game with a sore left knee. Manager Ron Roenicke said Ramirez had a chance to play this weekend.
