Braves' Sheets will retire after Wednesday's start

Pitcher Ben Sheets will make the final start of his injury-plagued career Wednesday afternoon for Atlanta.

Sheets says he will retire after Wednesday's game against the Pirates, which is the regular-season finale for both teams.

"I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt I'm not playing again," Sheets said, according to MLB.com. "No matter what, there is not enough help or money to pull me out of this one."

Sheets expected to retire when he underwent Tommy John surgery midway through the 2010 season. He had undergone a major surgical procedure to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right elbow two years earlier and figured his career was over.

But after throwing again early this year, Sheets was lured into a comeback by the Braves. He signed in July and went 4-1 with 1.41 ERA in his first five starts. He had less success in his next three starts before his right shoulder became too problematic in late August.

He is 4-4 with a 3.54 ERA. He has a career record of 94-96.

On Wednesday, Sheets, 34, will make his first appearance since going on the disabled list in late August.

Sheets will attempt to throw two innings on Wednesday.
