Bears safety Chris Conte has shoulder surgery

Chicago Bears safety Chris Conte had shoulder surgery last month, the team announced.

He'll be out four to five months, which puts him on schedule for training camp.

Conte is a former Bears third-round draft pick from Cal.

He has started 40 games in three seasons.

He started every game last season and had 95 tackles, three interceptions and a forced fumble.

For his career, he has 228 tackles, six interceptions, 13 pass deflections, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

Conte is expected to face competition from safeties Ryan Mundy, M.D. Jennings and Danny McCray, who were signed this offseason. They also brought back Craig Steltz.
