Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

Jan 29 (The Sports Xchange) - The New York Mets and second baseman Neil Walker agreed to a one-year, $10.55 million contract on Friday to avoid arbitration. Walker sought a salary of $11.8 million, and the Mets offered $9.4 million. Walker was acquired from Pittsburgh in the offseason in the deal that sent left-hander Jonathan Niese to the Pirates. He batted .269 with 16 homers and 71 RBIs last season. Walker is being counted to replace postseason hero Daniel Murphy, who left as a free agent and signed with the Washington Nationals. - - - The Milwaukee Brewers increased their outfield depth by acquiring Rymer Liriano from the San Diego Padres in exchange for left-hander Trevor Seidenberger. Liriano, 24, spent all of last season with Triple-A El Paso, hitting .292 with a .383 on-base percentage, a .460 slugging percentage, 14 homers, 64 RBIs and 18 stolen bases in 131 games. Seidenberger, 23 went a combined 5-2 with five saves and a 4.07 ERA in 30 relief appearances last year for Double-A Biloxi and high Class A Brevard County. To open a spot for Liriano on the 40-man roster, the Brewers designated outfielder Shane Peterson for assignment. - - - The Cleveland Indians will induct four franchise legends into their Hall of Fame in a ceremony on July 30 at Progressive Field, the team announced. Jim Thome, the Indians' all-time home run king; Albert Belle, still the only player to hit 50 homers and 50 doubles in the same season; Frank Robinson, the first African-American manager in baseball history; and Charlie Jamieson, who hit .316 over 14 seasons with the Indians and was a member of the 1920 World Series team, will be inducted before the Indians' game against the Oakland Athletics. - - - (Editing by Mark Lamport-Stokes)
