Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

April 18 (The Sports Xchange) - The St. Louis Cardinals activated shortstop Ruben Tejada (left quadriceps strain) from the 15-day disabled list Monday. Tejada, 26, injured his quad in the team's final spring training game on March 31 and began the 2016 season on the disabled list. He was signed by the Cardinals as a free agent on March 19 following his release by the New York Mets. Last season, Tejada batted .261 with three home runs, 23 doubles and 28 RBIs in 116 games for the Mets. The Cardinals also optioned infielder Greg Garcia to Triple-A Memphis following Sunday's win. He is batting .600 (6-for-10) in eight games this season. The Cardinals have already used three shortstops (Aledmys Diaz, Garcia, Jedd Gyorko) this season and Jhonny Peralta remains on the disabled list following surgery to repair the ligament in his left thumb. --- Boston third baseman Pablo Sandoval was in Florida to get a complete diagnosis on his ailing shoulder. But because of pain and the amount of swelling, noted orthopedic surgeon James Andrews was unable to complete his examination. Instead, Sandoval received a shot of cortisone and will have to wait at least two weeks for the swelling to subside before Andrews can complete his examination. --- Beloved former Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire is returning to the Twins two years after being let go. Gardenhire will assume the duties of a special assistant to general manager Terry Ryan. Those duties include being a roving minor league instructor while carrying out special assignments for Ryan. The 58-year-old Gardenhire, who last managed in 2014, guided the Twins to four straight seasons of 90-plus losses. --- The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced that two minor league players have been suspended following violations of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Tampa Bay Rays right-handed pitcher Damion Carroll has received a 50-game suspension without pay following a second positive test. The suspension of Carroll, who is currently on the roster of the Single-A Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Florida State League, is effective immediately. Detroit Tigers minor league right-handed pitcher Spenser Watkins has received a 50-game suspension without pay following a second positive test. The suspension of Watkins, who is currently on the roster of the Single-A West Michigan Whitecaps of the Midwest League, also is effective immediately. (Editing by Larry Fine) ))
