Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

April 23 (The Sports Xchange) - New York Yankees right-handed reliever Branden Pinder has a partial ligament tear in his right elbow and will decide in a few days whether to undergo Tommy John surgery or rehab the injury. The 27-year-old Pinder was placed on the disabled list Friday after the original diagnosis was a strained right elbow. If Pinder has ligament-replacement surgery, he likely would be sidelined at least a year. Yankees manager Joe Girardi confirmed Pinder's partial tear of his ulnar collateral ligament. "He'll probably make the decision the next couple of days," Girardi said Saturday. - - - Minnesota Twins right-hander Ervin Santana was scratched from his scheduled start on Sunday because of a sore lower back. The Twins called up righty Tyler Duffey from Triple-A Rochester and he will start in place of Santana. Santana first started feeling pain on Friday, but plans to make his next start, according to the team. He is 0-1 with a 3.15 ERA in four starts this season. Duffey has a 1.72 ERA in 15 2/3 innings this season with Rochester. Last year, he went 5-1 with a 3.10 ERA in 10 starts with Minnesota. - - - Boston Red Sox right-hander Carson Smith worked an inning at extended spring training and should begin an injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday. Smith, acquired via trade from Seattle during the offseason, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on April 3 with a right flexor muscle strain. Right-hander Eduardo Rodriguez threw 75 pitches in extended spring training and will be sent to Double-A Portland to begin his injury rehab assignment on Thursday. Rodriguez, placed on the 15-day DL with a right patella subluxation on April 3, is scheduled to make at least two rehab starts before being considered for recall. - - - The triple play that the Chicago White Sox turned on Friday in a 5-0 victory over the Rangers -- the first in the majors this season and the first-ever 9-3-2-6-2-5 triple play -- remained a hot topic on Saturday. But Texas manager Jeff Bannister did not appreciate being part of history, albeit on the wrong side of it. "There's no feel-good about it for anybody other than the White Sox and the White Sox fans," he said. - - - The Tampa Bay Rays optioned right-hander Danny Farquhar to Triple-A Durham to make room for left-hander Blake Snell. It is the Rays' first transactions this season. By their 17th game last season, the Rays had made 22 moves and this is the deepest the team has gone into a season without a transaction since 2007. - - - Detroit Tigers center fielder Cameron Maybin (left wrist fracture) began another rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo. His first assignment there was sidetracked when he was hit on the same wrist by another pitch. (Editing by Andrew Both)
