Baseball-Highlights of Sunday's MLB games

April 24 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Sunday's Major League Baseball games: White Sox 4, Rangers 1 Catcher Dioner Navarro homered and had a sacrifice fly as the Chicago White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 4-1 and completed a three-game sweep. Chicago starter Mat Latos continued his impressive pitching streak. Latos allowed a run and a season-high seven hits in six innings. He gave up six combined hits in his previous three starts. Latos is 4-0 after he went 4-10 with a 4.95 ERA with three teams last season. Blue Jays 6, Athletics 3 Ezequiel Carrera and Jose Bautista hit home runs, Drew Hutchison pitched into the sixth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Oakland Athletics 6-3. The Blue Jays (10-10) took the final two games of the three-game series after dropping the opener and gave the Athletics (10-9) their first losses on the road this season. Rays 8, Yankees 1 Steven Souza Jr. homered twice, Drew Smyly pitched seven innings and the Tampa Bay Rays hit five home runs an 8-1 rout of the New York Yankees. Corey Dickerson, Steve Pearce and Logan Forsythe also homered for Tampa Bay as the team hit five home runs in a game for the first time since June 29, 2014, at Baltimore. Cubs 9, Reds 0 Anthony Rizzo homered twice and Jason Hammel allowed only three hits in seven innings as the Chicago Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds 9-0. Chicago (14-5) scored a combined 38 runs in the four-game series and now heads back to Wrigley Field off to their best start since 1969. Through 19 games, the Cubs have outscored their opponents by 68 runs, the best differential in the majors. Mets 3, Braves 2 Jacob deGrom made a winning return to the mound as the New York Mets edged the Atlanta Braves 3-2. DeGrom (2-0) worked into the sixth inning and the Mets won for the seventh straight time in Atlanta. He had not pitched since April 8. He missed one start because of a lat strain and another after his newborn son had health issues. Indians 6, Tigers 3 Jose Ramirez scored two runs and knocked in two more, and the Cleveland Indians overcame the injury loss of starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco to win 6-3 and complete a three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers. Carrasco suffered a left hamstring injury during the third inning as he raced over to cover first base. Detroit's starting pitcher also had his day cut short by injury. Shane Greene (1-2) departed in the fourth with a blister on his middle finger. Mariners 9, Angels 4 Kyle Seager hit a three-run home run while Leonys Martin and Seth Smith each added a two-run drive to lead the Seattle Mariners to a 9-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. The Angels' Albert Pujols ended the longest slump of his career, 0-for-26, by hitting his 563rd career home run to tie Hall of Famer Reggie Jackson for 13th place all-time. Royals 6, Orioles 1 Yordano Ventura allowed three hits over seven innings and Alex Gordon and Eric Hosmer homered as the Kansas City Royals overpowered the Baltimore Orioles 6-1. Ventura (2-0) yielded a run in the first inning, but nothing after that. He allowed just a single and a walk after the first. Brewers 8, Phillies 5 Wily Peralta made his second quality start of the season and the Milwaukee offense belted out eight extra-base hits as the Brewers snapped a three-game losing streak with an 8-5 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Cardinals 8, Padres 5 Matt Carpenter broke a 5-5 tie with a run-scoring triple in the eighth inning and Randal Grichuk added a two-run double as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied to defeat the San Diego Padres 8-5 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Petco Park. The Cardinals had tied the game in the sixth on back-to-back homers by infielders Jedd Gyorko and Aledmys Diaz, the seventh and eighth hitters in the St. Louis order, in a span of five pitches off reliever Kevin Quackenbush. Dodgers 12, Rockies 10 Even by the no-lead-is-safe standards of Coors Field, the Los Angeles Dodgers' 12-10 win Sunday over the Colorado Rockies defied belief. The Dodgers jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the third inning, taking advantage of ineffective starter Jordan Lyles. That advantage vanished in the eighth when the Rockies batted around and scored five runs to go ahead 10-5. However, Rockies closer Jake McGee blew his first save of the season as the Dodgers erupted for five runs as they batted around in the ninth for a hard-earned win in the rubber game of the series. Nationals 6, Twins 5 (16 innings) Chris Heisey hit a solo homer off Michael Tonkin to lead off the bottom of the 16th inning as the Washington Nationals beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5 on Sunday. It was Heisey's first career walk-off homer. The game lasted five hours, 56 minutes, making it the longest regular-season game in Nationals history, since 2005, in terms of time. Marlins 5, Giants 4 J.T. Realmuto broke an eighth-inning tie with a home run, his fourth hit of the game, and reliever David Phelps escaped a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the eighth Sunday afternoon, lifting the Miami Marlins to a 5-4 victory over the San Francisco Giants. The Giants failed to record what would have been their first three-game home sweep of the Marlins since 2001. Pirates 12, Diamondbacks 10 (13 innings) Sean Rodriguez and pinch-hitter Jon Niese drove in runs in the top of the 13th inning and Pittsburgh right-hander Arquimedes Caminero recorded his first major league save in the Pirates' 12-10, 13-inning victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Sunday. Josh Harrison doubled off Evan Marshall (0-1) to open the 13th and scored on Rodriguez's double off the wall in left. Rodriguez took third on a groundout and scored when pitcher Niese, pinch-hitting for Neftali Feliz (1-0), singled to left. Red Sox 7, Astros 5 (12 innings) After blowing a ninth-inning lead, the Boston Red Sox scored twice in the 12th to beat the Houston Astros 7-5 Sunday at Minute Maid Park. In the 12th inning, with runners on second and third, Jackie Bradley Jr. roped a slider into right field, scoring Hanley Ramirez for the go-ahead run. Astros reliever Ken Giles (0-2) surrendered another run when a fastball got away from him for a wild pitch, allowing Ryan Hanigan to score. (Editing by Andrew Both/Peter Rutherford)
