Barret Robbins, who went AWOL for Super Bowl, charged with assault

The sad story of Barret Robbins has another horrifying chapter.

Robbins, who is known in NFL lore for disappearing right before the Oakland Raiders played in Super Bowl XXXVII, was charged with two felony battery counts after allegedly assaulting a woman and her daughter outside a Florida hotel according to the Associated Press.

Robbins’ history of mental issues has been documented many times in the years since he didn’t show up for the Super Bowl. Apparently Robbins didn’t know the two females he allegedly assaulted; the AP said he approached them randomly outside the hotel Monday and began punching them repeatedly. TMZ said before Robbins assaulted the two females, he allegedly attacked a person inside a bar, and then struck another person outside the bar. Then after allegedly punching the woman and her daughter Robbins sat down on a bench, the AP said.

Robbins was the Raiders’ starting center and was an All-Pro when they won the AFC championship at the end of the 2002 season. He played nine more NFL games after missing the Super Bowl. Robbins later said he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had substance-abuse issues. Robbins has had a few run-ins with the law after his playing days ended, including a 2005 incident in which he battled police, was shot twice and pleaded guilty to five charges. Also, in 2011, he was sentenced to five years in jail for a probation violation when crack cocaine was found in his car.
