Avs G Varlamov charged with assault

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov was formally charged with assault on Friday by the Denver District Attorney, the Denver Post reported.

Varlamov, 25, was arrested after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend at their Denver home on Oct. 30. According to an arrest affidavit, she claimed he knocked her down with a kick and stomped on her chest.

On Friday he was charged with one count of third-degree assault, a misdemeanor.

He was released from custody on a $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Denver County court on Dec. 2.

If convicted, Valamov could face a sentence ranging from probation to six months in jail.

The Avs released a statement, which read, "The Colorado Avalanche organization was informed about today's decision from the Denver District Attorney's Office and will have no further comment until the entire legal process has concluded."

Varlamov, the team's No. 1 goalie, has played in eight games since his arrest, going 4-4 in that stretch. For the season, Varlamov has an 11-5-0 record and 2.23 goals-against average.
