RIO DE JANEIRO — American Tori Bowie won her second medal of the Rio Games, taking bronze in the 200-meter dash Wednesday night.

The race was as much about who wasn’t in it as who was. Allyson Felix, a three-time Olympic medalist and the reigning 200 champion, did not make the team after a poor showing at U.S. Olympic trials.

The 25-year-old Bowie, fresh off a silver in the 100 meters, finished 0.37 seconds behind Jamaican Elaine Thompson, who complemented her gold in the 100 with another in the 200, with a winning time of 21.78 seconds. Thomson became the first woman to win both the 100 and 200 at the same Olympics since Florence Griffith Joyner did so in 1988 in Seoul.

Bowie’s time of 22.15 proved her a more-than-worthy replacement for Felix. Long considered an elite long jumper, Bowie switched to specialize in sprints and proved every bit as talented running fast as she was jumping far.

American Deajah Stevens finished seventh (22.65).
