Aldon Smith 'will play a lot' vs. Saints
San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith is expected to get significantly more playing time this Sunday against the New Orleans Saints.
Smith played just 12 snaps in the 49ers' loss to the Carolina Panthers last Sunday in his first game back after spending time in a treatment facility for substance abuse. He missed five games.
Smith, in his second week back with the team, should see an expanded role this Sunday as the 49ers try to rebound from a 10-9 loss at home against Carolina.
"He will play a lot," defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said.
The 49ers will need his pass-rushing skills against Saints quarterback Drew Brees. Smith has 34 sacks in 36 games in the NFL.
In other injury news:
--Fangio said rookie safety Eric Reid has a good shot of playing Sunday. Reid sustained his second concussion of the season against the Panthers. He is progressing in the NFL's concussions protocol but must pass tests before he can be cleared to play.
--Defensive tackle Ray McDonald is questionable with a high left ankle sprain. Tony Jerod-Eddie will play in McDonald's place if he is unable.
--Tight end Vernon Davis is on course to play after having a concussion against Carolina.
--Wide receiver Michael Crabtree is "progressing nicely" from a torn Achilles, according to offensive coordinator Greg Roman. He was injured in May. The team must activate him by Nov. 26 or else he cannot return this season.
