Agent: Stephen Hill didn't have a chance with 'Tebow-Sanchez fiasco'
After two unexceptional seasons, the Jets have moved on from 2012 second-round pick Stephen Hill. On Saturday, Hill's agent, Alan Herman, criticized the organization for how it handled the wide receiver's tenure in New York, even blaming the Tim Tebow-Mark Sanchez situation for stunting Hill's development.
"I'm disappointed in (GM John) Idzik and (coach) Rex (Ryan) with the way the whole thing went down there,'' Herman told USATODAY.com's Jim Corbett. "Two years in that kind of situation is disheartening.
"He didn't have a chance that first year with that whole Tim Tebow-Mark Sanchez fiasco. ... His second year, Geno Smith was learning how to play quarterback. So they never threw the ball deep because they wanted to simplify things for Geno."
Fair points but Hill's 21 receptions as a rookie, when Sanchez and Tebow were flailing their way through the 2012 season, ranked fifth on the team behind wideout Jeremy Kerley (56 catches), tight ends Jeff Cumberland (29) and Dustin Keller (28), and wideout Chaz Schillens (28).
And last season, Hill's 26 catches ranked sixth behind Kerley (43), David Nelson (36), Bilal Powell (36), Kellen Winslow (31) and Cumberland (26).
As for Hill's NFL future, Herman thinks Cleveland, which just lost Josh Gordon for the season to suspension, makes sense.
"I would think the Browns would put in a claim," the agent said. "(Coach Mike) Pettine knows him and they need receivers and Stephen can stretch the field."
The Browns also need receivers who can hold onto the ball; according to ProFootballFocus.com, Hill caught just 37.5 percent of the passes thrown in his direction last season.
