Adam Eaton rescued a jersey from Chris Sale's scissors and he wants it signed
In a baseball season that was full of incredible moments, one thing that still stands out is the late-July incident in which Chris Sale, then with the Chicago White Sox, took a pair of scissors to his team’s throwback jerseys. He didn’t want to wear that jersey while he pitched, so he cut up everyone’s jerseys so he wouldn’t have to.
It was somehow both bizarre and funny, and led to Sale getting a five-game suspension in addition to the scratched start on the day of the jersey massacre. But one jersey escaped the wrath of Sale’s scissors, and it belongs to Adam Eaton. Eaton and Sale were teammates at the time, and Eaton recently went on CSN Chicago’s White Sox podcast to reveal how his jersey managed to avoid being shredded.
“I think I may have the only one that didn’t get cut up. I secretly yanked mine down when he wasn’t looking, and as of right now I think – besides the coaches; the coaches are one thing – but I want to know for sure that I’m the only player that didn’t get his cut up.”
So what does Eaton want to do what that (probably) one-of-a-kind 1976 White Sox throwback jersey? For the time being it’s in his basement, presumably safe from any additional scissor attacks. (Though I’m sure that poor jersey has nightmares about being chased by giant scissors.) But Eaton hopes to get that very special jersey autographed by Sale himself.
Though to get an autograph the person signing it presumably has to actually want to sign it. Considering the weirdness of the incident and the suspension that followed, Sale might not want to put his signature on a memento of the whole thing. Regardless, Sale has a fan in Eaton. This is how he described Sale and his scissors taking on those jerseys, via CSN Chicago.
“I think there was quite an audience,” Eaton told Chuck Garfien. “And it was comical. I love Chris to death, and the beauty of Chris is that anything Chris does, he does full-bore. May it be working hard at baseball, may it be a bullpen, may it be a game.”
Sadly, even if Sale does want to sign that jersey, he may not get the chance for awhile. Sale was traded to the Boston Red Sox during MLB’s Winter Meetings, and Eaton was traded to the Washington Nationals. Those two teams don’t meet in interleague play in 2017. But hopefully, if Sale is willing, the two of them can make it happen. Boston and DC aren’t that far apart!
