Background

Earning the starting job as a true freshman as the University of Miami, Brad Kaaya looked like he could be the man to bring the ‘Canes back to prominence. Unfortunately, the team and Kaaya for that matter always seemed to be on the verge but never quite ready to take that final leap. That said, Kaaya is still one of the most talented quarterbacks in this draft class.

Seen at the beginning of this season as a potential top five draft pick, Kaaya has now fallen into a category where he could be taken in either the second, third, or even fourth round. While he could have used one more season to polish his skill set, coming out now will allow him to begin his development at the NFL level. While he won’t be a day one starter, Kaaya is someone that could take over the reigns for Ryan Tannehill should he once again go down.

Strengths

A three-year starter at Miami, Kaaya played in a pro style offense. This experience has made him comfortable playing inside the pocket, under center, and on play action passing downs. Despite some lackluster arm strength, Kaaya knows the limitations he faces and will rarely take a risky chance down the field.

Mechanics are off the charts for Kaaya due to his playing of the position since the age of eight. Unlike some college quarterbacks, Kaaya knows how to properly escape pressure and how to carry the football when loading up for a pass. Will be someone that you can give full control of your offense one day and could be even better with a solid running game behind him.

Weakness

Arm strength is not even average as far as quarterbacks go. Will struggle to make deep throws unless receivers get open early. Also has a tendency to rush passes and will fail to get all of the zip on the football. This has also seen Kaaya struggle to throw on intermediate routes with a 38% completion percentage on passes between 11 and 20 yards last season.

Will need to become a player that hits his short routes perfectly. Will not make Aaron Rodgers type moments due to his rigid if almost robotic approach. Struggles to throw off balance. Not someone that will escape extreme amounts of pressure. Decision making in these situations is questionable as Kaaya will takes sacks outside the pocket rather than throwing the football away.
