A's 10, Angels 6
OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland A's probably needed a loud wake-up call Tuesday night in their rematch against the Angels after beating them 10-8 in a 19-inning marathon that didn't end until early that morning.
A's center fielder Yoenis Cespedes did the honors. Twice. Cespedes hit a booming RBI double high off the right-center fence in the fourth inning and a loud two-run triple high off the left-center wall in the fifth, powering the A's to a 10-6 victory.
Cespedes went 2-for-4, drove in four runs and scored once. The A's have gone 3-0 since he came off the disabled list Sunday.
A's right-hander Jarrod Parker earned his first victory of the season after starting 0-4, the longest skid of his career. He held the Angels to three earned runs on six hits over six-plus innings, striking out four and walking two.
The A's improved to 5-0 against the Angels this season. The A's swept the Angels in a three-game series at Anaheim in April and can sweep them again with a win Wednesday afternoon in the finale at the O.co Coliseum.
After starting 10-16 last season, the Angels are off to an even slower start this year at 9-17. The A's improved to 16-12 and are 13-2 against teams in the American League West.
Angels right-hander Garrett Richards took the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits over 5.2 innings and falling to 1-2.
The A's and Angels played for six hours and 32 minutes in the series opener, the longest game in Oakland A's history and in Angels history. Tuesday night's game took 3:39.
Both teams took a beating during Monday night's marathon. Outfielders Coco Crisp (strained left hamstring) and Chris Young (strained left quad) and shortstop Jed Lowrie (strained neck) were all out of the A's starting lineup. The Angels placed center fielder Peter Bourjos on the 15-day disabled list with an injured left hamstring. Infielder Luis Jimenez opened the game on the bench, nursing a bruised shin.
The A's bats, however, looked healthy and energized for most of the game. So did the Angels'.
After Cespedes capped a three-run fifth with his two-run triple, putting the A's ahead 5-3, they scored four more times in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead. Seth Smith delivered the biggest blow, driving in three runs with a bases-loaded double off Angels reliever Barry Enright.
The Angels didn't go quietly. They scored three times in the seventh, cutting the A's lead to 9-6. Erick Aybar led off with a walk against Parker, and Mike Trout greeted reliever Evan Scribner with an RBI triple off the right-center wall. After Albert Pujols brought Trout home with a ground out, Mark Trumbo crushed a home run to deep left, his fifth of the season and second in two days.
The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third off Parker. Left fielder J.B. Shuck grounded an infield single up the middle and wound up on second when A's third baseman Josh Donaldson ranged far to his left, fielded the ball, spun and airmailed a throw to first for an error.
Shuck moved to third on Erick Aybar's groundout and scored on Mike Trout's ground ball to shortstop Adam Rosales. Rosales threw wildly to first for an error, but Parker got Pujols to hit into an inning-ending double play.
The A's answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth off Richards, taking a 2-1 lead. Seth Smith stroked a leadoff single to right and scored when Cespedes doubled high off the right-center wall. Cespedes took third on Aybar's throwing error, trying to get Smith at the plate. He scored on Richards' wild pitch to Brandon Moss.
The Angels moved back ahead, 3-2, with two runs in the fifth. With one out, Shuck reached again on an infield single then moved to third on Aybar's double to right. Trout scorched a two-run double over third base -- just out reach of a diving Donaldson -- and into the left-field corner.
The A's moved back ahead in the fifth, scoring three times to take a 5-3 lead. Derek Norris lined a leadoff single to center, moved to second on a Richards wild pitch then reached third on Eric Sogard's groundout. John Jaso blooped a double down the left-field line, bringing Norris home.
After Rosales walked, Cespedes launched a two-out, two-run triple off the left-center wall, just below the 388-foot sign.
NOTES: The Angels reinstated Aybar (left heel contusion) from the 15-day disabled list Tuesday. Left-hander Michael Roth was optioned Tuesday to Double-A Arkansas. He was 1-1 with a 9.31 ERA in seven appearances, including one start, for the Angels. ... The Angels recalled outfielder Scott Cousins from Triple-A Salt Lake City. Cousins was hitting .224 (15-for67) with one double, one triple and five RBI for Salt Lake City. ... The A's recalled right-handed reliever Evan Scribner from Triple-A Sacramento and optioned right-handed starter Dan Straily to the River Cats. Scribner was on the A's Opening Day roster and made eight appearances with a 4.26 ERA.
