Hawks part ways with Woodson

The Atlanta Hawks are looking for a new head coach after informing Mike Woodson they won't be bringing him back, NBA sources confirmed to Yahoo! Sports.

NBA.com first reported Woodson's ouster.

Woodson's contract was up at the end of this season. He helped guide the Hawks to three consecutive trips to the playoffs, but Atlanta was swept in the Eastern Conference semifinals each of the past two seasons.

Woodson had a 206-289 record in six seasons with the Hawks. After struggling with the Milwaukee Bucks in the first round and being swept by the Orlando Magic – in the most lopsided four-game sweep in NBA history – Woodson's chances of getting a new contract with the team ended Friday.

The Hawks join the New Jersey Nets, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers and the Los Angeles Clippers as teams with coaching vacancies. Woodson could become a candidate for another job.

Woodson became the Hawks' head coach prior to the 2004-05 season. Atlanta improved its win total each season, culminating with a 53-29 record and the East's No. 3 seed this season.
