Marlins recall RHP Guerra, move Realmuto to paternity leave

The Miami Marlins announced a series of internal moves Monday, selecting the contract of veteran right-handed reliever Javy Guerra from Triple-A New Orleans and moving catcher J.T. Realmuto to the paternity list.

In corresponding move, the Marlins also recalled Chad Wallach from New Orleans, placed right-hander Drew Rucinski on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right groin, and moved southpaw Caleb Smith (already out for the season with a Grade 3 lat strain) to the 60-day DL.

Realmuto, 27, is fresh off being named to his first All-Star team on Sunday. The five-year veteran is hitting .317 with 12 home runs, 44 RBIs and a .919 OPS, all of which are on pace for career bests. Per league rules, he can stay on paternity leave for up to three days.

This marks the eighth consecutive season that the 32-year-old Guerra has pitched in the majors, and he owns a career 2.99 ERA in 169 appearances. He burst onto the big league scene with the Dodgers in 2011, going 2-2 with a 2.31 ERA and 21 saves as a rookie. When healthy, he has put up strong results in the majors (2.60 ERA in 45 games with Dodgers in 2012, 2.91 ERA in 42 games with Chicago White Sox in 2014, 3.00 ERA in 16 outings with Marlins last season).

Guerra's career has been limited by a series of injuries, in addition to a 50-game suspension in 2015 over a drug of abuse -- not a performance-enhancing substance.
