Each week, Five To Watch breaks down the most significant players and storylines for the upcoming weekend's tournament. We're not saying these guys will win, or that you should pick them for your fantasy team; we're just saying you ought to keep an eye on them. You never know what might happen. Today, we run down the field in the final regular-season event of the year.
Sergio Garcia: Believe it or not, Garcia is one of those who's dangerously close to missing the cut for the playoffs. (Let's not talk about whether the playoffs are a good thing or a hopeless contrivance. We'll save that for later.) After a stellar wrap to 2008, Sergio has had a disappointing 2009, but all could be forgiven with a late run.
Lucas Glover: Not getting the outright nod for the Presidents Cup had to sting, especially when Glover knew it was within his grasp. But even though he's the odds-on favorite to make the squad, Glover knows he'll have to deliver strong this week to make a case for himself. After the way he played at the PGA, he's starting to prove that Bethpage was no fluke.
David Toms: Toms is the perfect example of the beige golfer -- quietly, blandly competent. He'll never throw a serious scare into you, but he can silently creep up a leaderboard and keep in the hunt, as he did for much of the PGA.
Carl Pettersson: The defending champ at this event has had an absolutely wretched 2009, missing more than half his cuts and ranking 162nd on the money list. That's not what we'd expect out of him, so if he's going to salvage his season, at least he's in familiar territory.
Rocco Mediate: Just because. Until Sunday, he was the underdog everybody thought of when they thought of Tiger. As Torrey Pines fades farther in the distance, Rocco's star dims as well. Which is a shame, because he's one of the great guys in golf and deserves to stay front-and-center ... or at least front-and-little-left-of-center.
All right, your turn. Who are your picks for this weekend? Go!
