Eddie George: 'There's a level of dysfunction' at Ohio State

Is there something wrong at Ohio State? Former Buckeyes running back Eddie George thinks so.

George was on ESPNU’s SiriusXM channel Tuesday and said he believes there’s a level of dysfunction within the Buckeyes program. Ohio State is No. 10 in the College Football Playoff rankings but looked less than impressive in a 36-31 win over Nebraska on Saturday.

“I’m like man, these guys, they don’t look well,” George said. “And a couple things came to mind; there’s something going on there that we, the public, doesn’t know. I just feel like, my personal opinion, there’s a level of dysfunction there, I believe within the walls of Ohio State. Whether it’s with the head coach and the administration, the coaching staff, there’s something that’s just not right. I can’t put my finger on it, I don’t know exactly what it is but the way this team looks under Urban Meyer, I’ve never seen them not be prepared for a game, fumbling the ball everywhere. It just looked like they weren’t dialed in mentally.”

Ohio State’s win over Nebraska was the team’s first game after losing to Purdue two weeks ago. The Buckeyes committed three turnovers and won by just five points despite a dreadful Nebraska onside kick in the first quarter.

To say the season has been chaotic for Ohio State is an understatement. Coach Urban Meyer and athletic director Gene Smith were suspended for their roles in the handling of domestic abuse allegations against a former assistant coach. Meyer returned to coach the team after the first three games of the season.

Star defensive end Nick Bosa suffered a season-ending injury against TCU and has started preparing for the NFL draft. And Meyer revealed in October that he has a congenital cyst in his brain and had surgery in 2014.

Despite all of that — and what George believes is some dysfunction — Ohio State still has a chance to make the playoff. If the Buckeyes beat Michigan in the final week of the regular season and win the Big Ten Championship game then a playoff is possible depending on what happens to the teams currently ahead of the Buckeyes.
