Ryan Vogelsong’s poor timing

Ryan Vogelsong’s poor timing

Monday night's outing may have been a make-or-break one for San Francisco Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong. An All-Star in 2011 and a key part of the franchise's second World Series title in three years last season, Vogelsong was off to a disappointing start in 2013. There was even speculation the 35-year-old could potentially lose his spot in the rotation. One of the feel good stories in baseball over the last few years, the right-hander had compiled a 1-4 record with an 8.06 ERA entering his start against the Washington Nationals. But for the first five innings against the Nats, Vogelsong appeared to be back on track. With the Giants ahead 6-0, he had allowed only three hits in 79 pitches and lowered his ERA by nearly a full run to 7.19. Then came his at-bat against Craig Stammen.

With runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Vogelsong swung awkwardly at Stammen's 89-mph fastball that was up and in. It hit him on the right hand. Nicole Vogelsong, the pitcher's wife who is active on Twitter, sent this out during the game:

Then after the game, the team had this to report:

No matter how long he's out, the news was tough to take for a guy who was in the middle of a bounce-back start. San Fran beat Washington 8-0.

Moving to hockey, the son of former NHL player and legendary enforcer Tie Domi had an incredible assist in Memorial Cup play. Max Domi, an 18-year-old center for the London Knights, went between his legs for a helper finished off by Bo Horvat. The Knights eventually lost to the Portland Winterhawks 6-3.

Finally, if you're counting on a reconciliation between Tiger Woods and Sergio Garcia, don't hold your breath. When asked if there was a chance he would contact Garcia about their recent dust-up, Woods responded with a simple, "No."
