Florida State is recruiting a kid in middle school

It wasn't long ago that eighth-grader Rashad Williams of Charlotte, N.C. found out that he'd be attending West Mecklenburg High in the fall. A fairly typical revelation in the life of a middle schooler. But after his football highlight video — a professionally produced compilation of Williams' best plays from a 14-and-under team — found its way to the next level, Williams soon discovered that the Florida State Seminoles are interested in him.

Rashad's father Hilton Williams was simply stunned when Brenson Bruckner, a former Carolina Panther who played for Sal Sunseri (now Florida State's defensive ends coach), contacted the Williams family to say that Sunseri and FSU were impressed by Rashad's footwork.

“It is unbelievable,” the 5-foot-7, 150-pound running back told 247Sports Wednesday. “I didn’t expect to get recruited at this age. I thought maybe it (would) happen by my junior or senior year.”

The 13-year-old Williams will get a chance to visit the national champs on campus when Florida State's Junior Day takes place on March 1. There, he'll get a chance to meet the players and perhaps talk to Jameis Winston about the Seminole experience. Then, he'll return to Charlotte to finish middle school.

The No. 1 college basketball team in the country remains unbeaten, courtesy of an astonishing finish against No. 25 Pittsburgh. Down by one and inbounding the ball from underneath their own basket with 4.4 seconds to go, the Orange got the ball to freshman Tyler Ennis — who did the rest. Ennis dribbled the ball just past half-court and sank a long-range three as time expired to beat the Panthers at home.

Jeter's fond Facebook farewell

Derek Jeter announced Wednesday that the 2014 season will officially be his last, a decision that he said was months, if not longer, in the making. In a long, heartfelt letter on his Facebook fan page, Jeter began by thanking fans, reflected on his last 20 years as a Yankee and speculated at possible future plans. "But before that," Jeter wrote, "I want to soak in every moment of every day this year, so I can remember it for the rest of my life. And most importantly, I want to help the Yankees reach our goal of winning another championship."
