David Beckham's 40th birthday generates tons of buzz like you'd expect

Saturday is David Beckham's birthday, but it's not any old birthday. He turned 40. And to celebrate the Big Four Oh, the forrmer Manchester United, Real Madrid, L.A. Galaxy, AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain star jetted to Marrakech with wife Victoria for a weekend of lavish partying with friends at the luxury Amanjena resort.

That was a given. So was the buzz on social media over the birthday boy, who got the train rolling by finally joining Instagram and posting a selfie while laying in bed to stake his claim as the planet's sexiest man in his 40s and the supreme master of taking black-and-white photos on a smartphone.

Beckham received birthday wishes from his former clubs and fans. The retrospectives on Twitter covered everything from his greatest goals to his numerous hairstyles over the years – most of them with the hashtag "#DB40."

Of course, some of world football's biggest names and a few world sport icons wished Beckham happy birthday, too.
