Luis Suarez apologizes for biting Branislav Ivanovic as he gains a new fan in Mike Tyson

Perhaps learning from his previously misdeeds and controversies, Luis Suarez was quick to apologize to Branislav Ivanovic (via Twitter) for biting him during Liverpool's 2-2 draw against Chelsea on Sunday. The chomp, which went unpunished, took place in the second half of the match, after Suarez was booked for a handball that led to Chelsea's second goal and before he scored Liverpool's equalizer in the 96th minute.

Though Liverpool's official website only described the bite as "an altercation" in their match report and manager Brendan Rodgers claimed he hadn't seen the incident, two-time biter Suarez called his behavior "inexcusable."

The FA will likely investigate Suarez's act and could hand down a very stiff punishment. But the Liverpool striker has gained at least one new fan in former boxer Mike Tyson, who famously bit off a chunk of Evander Holyfield's ear during a match in 1997. Tyson began following Suarez on Twitter shortly after Suarez's latest nibble.

UPDATE: Liverpool released an expanded statement from Suarez on their official website, as well as one from managing director Ian Ayre and a few words from Brendan Rodgers. Says Suarez:

"I am deeply sorry for my inexcusable behaviour earlier today during our match against Chelsea.

"I have issued an apology and have tried to contact Branislav Ivanović to speak to him personally. I apologise also to my manager, playing colleagues and everyone at Liverpool Football Club for letting them down."

And Ayre:

"Luis has made an unreserved apology for his actions today.

"His behaviour is not befitting of any player wearing a Liverpool shirt and Luis is aware that he has let himself and everyone associated with the club down. We will deal with the matter internally and await any action from the FA."

And Captain Obvious Rodgers:

"Having reviewed the video footage and spoken to Luis, his behaviour is unacceptable and I have made him aware of this."

We can only imagine that conversation went something like this:

Rodgers: You can't bite people, Luis.

Suarez: Yeah I can. I've done it twice now.

Rodgers: No, I mean you shouldn't. I'm forbidding it. No more biting things that are human.

Suarez: What if they might be a robot?

Rodgers: Branislav Ivanovic is not a robot, Luis.

Suarez: Did you bite him too? How do you know?

Rodgers: I just know. Look. All I ask of you is one thing. Trust yourself. And your teammates. And don't bite people.

Suarez: That's three things.

Rodgers: I'm glad we had this talk.
