Abby Wambach thanks fans for support after marrying girlfriend Sarah Huffman

It's been a memorable year for Abby Wambach. In January she became just the second American to win the FIFA Women's World Player of the Year award after Mia Hamm and in June she surpassed Hamm's all-time international scoring record. Now she's added a personal joy to her professional ones by marrying girlfriend and Western New York flash teammate Sarah Huffman in Hawaii last weekend.

The wedding was first reported by TMZ after a slew of social media postings from U.S. teammates like Alex Morgan and Sydney Leroux enjoying their time in Hawaii. Though Wambach has never spoken publicly about her sexuality or relationship with Huffman, she hasn't made a point to keep it a secret, either. But on Thursday, she tweeted thanks from Huffman and herself to her followers for their support with a "honeymoon" hashtag.

Huffman publicly shared her sexuality in July when she joined nonprofit group Athlete Ally as an ambassador along with Wambach and athletes from the NFL, NBA, WNBA, MLS and others.

“I am proud to be an athlete ally because I dream of a world full of equal opportunities and treatment,” Huffman said. “I believe that sports are a place where everybody belongs. Discrimination based upon sexual orientation, race, gender have no place in the world - nevertheless sports. I am excited to be an ally and stand up for people like me in the LGBT community.”

In August, she tweeted that she was "following in others footsteps for equality" along with a picture of her rainbow nail polish and a shiny addition to her ring finger.
