Texas wide receiver sets new state record, nearly breaks national mark with 454 yard game
Marc Lozoya is the top wide receiver for Alexander High (Laredo, Tex.) , but even he couldn't have anticipated the success that came his way on Thursday night. In the span of four quarters, the senior caught 17 passes and racked up an astonishing 454 yards, setting a new Texas state record in the process.
As first reported by the Laredo Morning Times, Lozoya also caught six touchdowns in his squad's 63-35 victory against C.C. Winn High (Eagle Pass, Tex.), finishing just 2 yards shy of tying the all-time single game yardage national mark of 456. He was taken out of the game in the fourth quarter and didn't play until his team's final possession. Had he played and caught even one more pass he almost certainly would have broken through the 456-yard barrier.
Walport High (Waldport, Ore.) receiver Kraig Pruett holds that national record. The previous Texas best was 392 yards, a total completely shattered over the course of Lozoya's evening. That Lozoya was so close to the all-time record and was pulled from the game seems to indicate that he had no idea just how close he was.
"That was exceptional," Alexander coach Joel Lopez told the Morning Times. "It's one of the best games out of a receiver I've ever seen. We talked to Marc about catching the football because he is extremely dangerous when he has the ball in the open field. He had some drops last week he felt really bad about. This week he came out to play. It's just a matter of getting the ball in his hands and he did the rest."
Fittingly, Lozoya's quarterback, Will Swain, also racked up impressive stats in the victory. Swain finished with 545 yards and 7 touchdown passes in the victory.
There's no question that Lozoya's performance was unique, but the barometer of just how out of the blue his receiving achievement was is perhaps best viewed when it is compared with his season total. Entering the game, Lozoya had accumulated 469 total receiving yards in 2013. He had 25 receptions over the course of Alexander's five victories.
In one night he nearly doubled both of those totals.
"It's an honor," Lozoya told the Morning Times. "I couldn't do it without my line. I couldn't do it without my quarterback Aaron Swain. He's the one who put the ball in the right places. I feel blessed right now. I don't have any words."
That sense of astonishment was almost certainly shared by all those in attendance, who witnessed one of the great receiving performances of all-time.
