Amazing 80-foot buzzer-beater proves difference in Iowa state quarterfinal game

If the DeWitt (Iowa) Central Clinton High boys' basketball coaching staff were drawing up a play to end the first half, they probably wouldn't have designed it for junior Logan Sheppard.

So, it's a good thing this play was entirely unscripted.

Sheppard, who entered Tuesday's Class 3A state quarterfinal with exactly zero 3-pointers on four previous attempts this season, hauled in a rebound with one second left and banked this 80-footer home. The Orange City (Iowa) MOC-Floyd Valley High defender was lucky he wasn't whistled for an and-one.

"I just kind of chucked it up and it just went in," he told the Des Moine Register. "I was really surprised."

So was everyone else, including the game's announcer. "Who threw that up?" the play-by-play man said. "I don't know who that was. I'm not sure who hit the shot." Not many people did.

Sheppard came into the state's elite eight averaging only 1.3 points per contest, according to the Iowa High School Athletic Association. His 3-pointer cut MOC-Floyd Valley's lead to 30-29 at the break and ultimately proved the difference in Central Clinton's 69-67 victory.

It was Sheppard's lone shot of the game. He finished with just three points, but he sure made them count.
