Sochi roundup: Team USA hockey shut out in semifinals by Canada, 18-year old Mikaela Shiffrin wins gold in slalom

The American hockey team finally got its shot to play the Canadians. Four years after falling in overtime to the Canadians in the Vancouver gold medal game, the Americans fell short again. Canada’s Jamie Benn beat Jonathan Quick on a redirected pass in the second period for the game’s only goal as the Canadians prevailed, 1-0. Quick was brilliant, making several acrobatic saves on 37 shots, but the American offense couldn’t break through the tough Canadian defense. It will be Canada advancing to the gold medal game against Sweden Sunday. The Americans will try to salvage bronze against Finland.

American skiing phenom Mikaela Shiffrin, 18, became the youngest skier to win the slalom Friday night, posting a two-run combined score of 1:44.54. She bested Austria’s Marlies Schild, 32, for the gold by .53 seconds. Shiffrin came into the event ranked as the world’s top slalom skier and the teenager did not disappoint. She won the U.S. slalom team’s fifth medal in Sochi and second gold.

It has been a rough Olympics for the U.S. speedskating team. The short track team struggled and the long track team wasn’t any better, but the 5,000-meter relay team was finally able to salvage a medal. The team of J.R. Celski, Jordan Malone, Eddy Alvarez and Chris Creveling couldn’t quite surpass the Russians, but still came in second to win the silver. The Americans actually took a brief lead toward the end of the race, but with seven laps to go, the Russians re-took the lead and held on.

Seventeen-year-old Russian skater Adelina Sotnikova edged favorite Yuna Kim of South Korea to win gold in figure skating on Thursday. After the results were revealed, many skating fans questioned the result and accused judges of issuing inflated scores for Russian skaters. A petition on change.org has garnered nearly two million signatures calling for an “open investigation into judging decisions of women’s figure skating” and demanding “rejudgment at the Sochi Olympics.” This could get interesting.

Two athletes – a top biathlete from Germany and an Italian bobsledder – were kicked out of the Sochi Olympics in doping cases. Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle, a two-time gold medalist, tested positive for a stimulant according to the German Olympic Committee. She has already been removed from the team and will be sent home. Sachenbacher-Stehle blamed the positive test on a nutritional supplement. William Frullani, the Italian bobsledder, also tested positive for another banned stimulant.

Men's Hockey - Bronze Medal Game (10:00 a.m. ET) - Team USA will try to avoid leaving Sochi empty-handed as they square off with Finland for the bronze medal Saturday. Finnish goaltender Tuukka Rask missed Friday's semifinal against Sweden due to illness, so the Finns may have to go with Kari Lehtonen in net for the second straight game.

Men's slalom (11:15 a.m. ET) - Ted Ligety will look to build off his gold in the giant slalom on Saturday in men's slalom. Bode Miller re-aggravated a knee injury and will sit out. Giuliano Razzoli of Italy will try to defend his slalom gold that he won in Vancouver.

Men's and women's snowboard parallel slalom (5:45 a.m. ET) - This event will make its Olympic debut and both the men and women will compete on Saturday. American-born Vic Wild is the favorite on the men's side after he won the parallel giant on Wednesday. Wild was born in Washington but married a Russian snowboarder and was granted Russian citizenship two years ago.
