Lindsey Vonn plans to compete in 2018 Winter Olympics
Lindsey Vonn's absence from competition due to injury is one of the more notable stories in the run-up to the Sochi Games. But Vonn isn't closing the door on her own Olympic career. On Tuesday, she told the Today Show that she plans to compete through the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
"After making the decision not to compete in Sochi, I have actually committed myself to racing through to the next Olympics," Vonn said. "I’m very motivated. I have a lot that I want to accomplish still. I want to take my time. I felt a little bit rushed last time trying to be back and ready for Sochi."
Vonn has had two major knee surgeries in the past year, stemming in large part from a catastrophic injury suffered last February. She has indicated that she will return to the slopes for the World Cup season beginning in October.
Vonn will be 33 at the start of the 2018 Pyeongchang Games. If she was able to medal at those Games, she'd be the oldest Alpine skiing medalist in Olympic history.
As NBC Sports notes, Vonn's career legacy is secure and she's now in pursuit of all-time records. (Much like her boyfriend Tiger Woods, matter of fact.) Vonn has 59 World Cup wins, just three behind Annemarie Moser-Proell's women's career record. While the Austrian's record is within reach, Vonn has said she has her eye on Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark, who holds the all-time record with 86 races.
In the near term, Vonn will serve as a correspondent for NBC in the days leading up to Sochi's Opening Ceremony.
