Bobby Robins is a 31-year-old journeyman who drops the gloves with frequency, fighting 29 times last season with the ECHL Chicago Express and the AHL Providence Bruins. On Tuesday night, he participated in the P-Bruins’ scrimmage against the Boston Bruins. So did Adam McQuaid, the Boston defenseman playing his first game since recovering from a concussion and a blood clot.

McQuaid decided to test his might against Robins. The AHLer’s right fist had a different plan:

Joe Haggerty of had the blow-by-blow:

McQuaid went right after Robbins and the two parties circled a few times before landing their punches. McQuaid threw a right hand that missed Robbins’ head and then the Providence Bruins enforcer – who has racked up 138 penalty minutes this season – downed the Bruins defenseman with a strong overhand right punch.

“Everybody’s working hard, and those guys are excited to get their season going. We’ve been playing now for a while, and we’re pretty excited too, just for the hockey world,” said Robbins. “It’s one of those things where you get riled up in front of the net, just playing hard-nosed hockey.”

It’s also one of those things where Robins was in midseason form while McQuaid hadn’t had a fight since Feb. 22, 2012. And by “midseason form” we mean he’s had 21 fights already in the AHL.
