Will Teemu Selanne remain with the Anaheim Ducks through the trade deadline?

Teemu SelanneWith the Anaheim Ducks 10 points back of 8th place in the Western Conference, it's really no surprise that ageless phenom Teemu Selanne's name is beginning to get tossed around as a trade target. He's on an expiring contact and he's got 50 points in 53 games. Sure, he's 41, but clearly, his age isn't bothering him. It shouldn't bother anyone else.

So is Bob Murray shopping Selanne? According to the Ducks' GM, no. In fact, it's not even up to him whether the Ducks' leading scorer is traded or not -- it's entirely Selanne's decision. From the Orange County Register:

General Manager Bob Murray has said that he has no interest in trading Selanne. It would have to be up to the winger to ask for a deal if the Ducks are out of playoff contention by the deadline but he wouldn't address that possibility after taking the morning skate ahead of Friday night's game against the Wings.

"I have tried to avoid that question," Selanne said. "We still have [hope]. Everybody in this room believes that we can make the playoffs and I think that would be almost wrong to even think about any other options. That's not in my mind right now. Let's see what happens.

It's tough to fault Selanne for such a noncommittal answer. The truth is, while the Ducks are indeed 10 points out of a playoff spot, they're also 7-1-2 in their last 10 games. And with the rest of the Western Conference's bubble teams struggling to establish a claim on that eighth seed, Anaheim stealing the spot is still a possibility.

Whether it's a distinct or a remote possibility remains to be seen, at least until after their upcoming, 7-game road trip, which ends three days before the trade deadline. A good showing on that trip and there's still a chance that Selanne enters the postseason with Anaheim.

This is a shame, of course, if you're a fan of ageless, Hall of Fame-bound, robo-Euros like the Detroit Red Wings are. Unsurprisingly, they're one of the teams rumoured to be interested in Selanne's services, and with the Ducks opening their trip in Detroit Friday, Selanne was asked about whether he'd be willing to join fellow Finn Valterri Filppula in the Motor City. From the Detroit Free Press:

"We have good chemistry, let's put it that way," Selanne said, smiling. "But I try to avoid that question, because the only main focus is on here."

In short: we'll see. There's a lot riding on Anaheim's road trip, and one imagines the Red Wings will be hoping to make sure it starts poorly for more reasons than one.

If he stays with Anaheim and they don't make it he can go play in the World Championships, which happen to be held in his home Finland. He keeps his NHL rep intact, and gets to play the national hero role one last time. I can't imagine him leaving the Ducks ...

Hadn't thought of that. Granted, I didn't think he was going anywhere anyways, but I can see that as being a part of his motivation to not moving. However, I think a player like Selanne would rather try for the Cup than try for a World Championship.

He is Mr. Duck. He isnt leaving. He will retire as a Duck and be the first to have his number hang from the rafters in Anaheim

No doubt about anything you said, but if I were Selanne. I would want more shot at the cup before I retire. Thats what competitive players do, want to win the championship and it's not going to happen this year with the Ducks.

Selanne won't go anywhere, he's too grounded in the OC community.....He is the face of the Franchise...

Selanne and Filppula on a line would be sick.

Selanne would only improve an already potent offence. Sure, he'd compliment the wings very well; but the wings need a goaltender! Its the wings puck handling that keeps opponents away from the detroit nets. Let the 2 teams have the same number of SOG and see who comes out on top. The wings are a GREAT team but they have very average to -average goaltending. That will stop them in the playoffs as it did last year.

Bruins fan here and i just wanted to make a good point. I know that Selanne will be missed in Anaheim if he is traded but here me out. Ray Bourque was traded to the avalanche in his last nhl season when they won the cup and everyone not only still loved him but was happy we traded him to get his cup! now selanne already has one but still...

I am not even a Anaheim fan, but whatever Selanne want's will be whatever he gets. And deservingly so. He is not playing for the cup this year, he is playing for the team.

I have a lot of respect for Selanne. He's still shooting. He has never done anything except be a real serious pest against my Wings. Hail to Selanne... but, it will be OK when we don't have to play against you. No offense.

Some Ducks fans would have a coronary if Selanne went to Detroit. I kinda think he's earned the right to go wherever the heck he wants. Now if the Ducks sent anyone else over there I'd be upset, but Selanne can go wherever he wants as far as I'm concerned. He only has one last chance to win a Cup we have to give him the Bourque clause here...

If he goes to the wings it will only make them stronger, the Wings look like they are Cup champs now even without him. Bringin the cup back were it belongs in Hockeytown.

The way he is ruling it out seems like he not only has faith in his team but also that he may be back for anothe season.

He's too classy and unselfish. He'd never ride Saku Koivu under the bus for another cup. Ducks were 20 back just a few weeks ago.Watch out.

he is umm "wise" enough to play for the wings! not a huge fan of players treating the wings as there one last chance at a grand farwell, but in selanne's case ill make an exception.

If I am the GM for the Jets, Selanne will be in Winnipeg the moment he is becoming available. And he will be finishing his career where he started in the capital of Manitoba.

whether or not selanne stays, the ducks will have a godd three year run, without winning the cup and then suck, its boudreau's type of coaching. anahiem fell for the trap that washington did.
