Sabres’ John Scott on Maple Leafs captain: ‘He’s Princess Phaneuf’

Buffalo Sabres forward John Scott played only 6:38 during Saturday night's 4-2 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, but managed to rack up 14 minutes in penalties during one skirmish early in the final period.

After a collision with a falling Dion Phaneuf, the Maple Leafs captain got into it with Cody McCormick and then a big scrum went down. After all the drama, Scott was given a pair of minors for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct.

Here's the full sequence:

While talking with MSG after the game, Scott took exception with the misconduct call and figured it was the referees protecting the league's star players, like Phaneuf.

"My right leg took a beating today. I blocked a shot, then [Phaneuf] bailed on me and all of a sudden I'm not allowed to hit him anymore. He's Princess Phaneuf. It's a joke. My leg's fine. Everything's good. It's just something where I guess you're not allowed to hit the star guys anymore in this league."

Scott told Bill Hoppe of the Oleans Times Herald that he believes the misconduct call was the referees' way of preventing anything further from going down. Given the recent history between the Sabres and Leafs, that's a smart assumption.

“But I understand it,” said Scott. “I definitely have a reputation that comes with me. Obviously, this year isn’t helping. What are you going to do? I’m just going to keep doing my thing.”
