Puck Headlines: Heritage Classic in Winnipeg?; Prospal re-signs; hockey stick DVD rack

    Hockey stick DVD rack

    • More awesome hockey stick furniture. This homemade DVD rack comes to us courtesy of Red Wings fan Mike Scarlett: "The stick blade on top is autographed by Eddie Bruneteau and the middle stick blade is autographed by Patrick Roy. The other idea we had that works out well although you can't see it too well as its filled to capacity is goalie stick paddles behind the DVDs to keep them from falling out the back."

    • According to a player's poll, Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators and Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers are the toughest goalies to beat in a shootout. Please tell me there's another poll coming on the easiest goalies, and that a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs is on it, just so we get more angry Burke quotes. [SI]

    • The Blackhawks have lost 6 straight. Who's to blame? Stan Bowman. [Fox Chicago]

    • The NHL is apparently considering Winnipeg as a future site for the Heritage Classic, leading Vancouverites to break out their maps in an attempt to determine whether Winnipeg is far enough east for this to be evidence of East Coast Bias. [Winnipeg Free Press]

    • Help out Kristin Shaw, a Philadelphia Flyers fan and hockey blogger that's been diagnosed with cancer and needs $75,000 for a treatment that's not covered by her insurance. [Hammer Rules]

    • 28-year-old Evan Kaufmann is a set to play for the German national ice hockey team. Kaufmann "qualifies to play for Germany through his grandfather Kurt, who survived concentration camps to flee with his sister to America." [Daily Mail]

    • Columbus Blue Jackets' forward Vinny Prospal has signed a 1-year, $2.5 million extension to remain with the club next season. [NHL]

    • Speaking of the Blue Jackets, "My roommate says David Savard should give some of his eyebrows to Derek Dorsett." [Reddit Hockey]

    Savard should share

    • Celebrate Valentine's Day by going to Dunkin' Donuts with Tyler Seguin. [PHT]

Hershey's Kisses jerseys• Speaking of Valentine's Day, the Hershey Bears will be wearing these jerseys in warmups. Oh my goodness. [@TheHersheyBears]

    • In minor hockey news, the BCHL's Penticton Vees set a league record with their 30th consecutive victory Tuesday night. [Vancouver Sun]

    • Neat stuff on the growing popularity of hockey in the United Arab Emirates. [NHL]

    • The retirement of Owen Nolan reminds this guy that he's old now. [Obstructed View Sports]

    • 5 blockbuster trade deadline deals that almost happened. [Sportsnet]

    • Adam Proteau lists the top 10 NHLers most in need of a change of scenery. Amazed it wasn't all Columbus Blue Jackets. [THN]

And finally, the awesomest way to prove your iPhone case is really sturdy: take an 82 MPH slapshot with it. [Gizmodo]

Red Wings fan having Avalanche Sakic's statue? highly suspicious.. or I might live in different universe
      • MattD 3 months ago
Sakic is the ONLY Av that could do this.
      • Tape2Tape 3 months ago
This is a classy fan who knows great hockey players regardless of team affiliation and rivalry history. Both Sakic and Yzerman, Roy and Shannahan have made this game great.

I'm actually the guy who made the hockey stick dvd rack and sent in the pic. I'm from Denver originally, but my dad is from Detroit so I grew up as a Wings fan before the Avs ever moved to town. I've never been an Avs-hater though, save for guys like Claude Lemieux and Adam Foote. I don't know how you can't respect guys like Sakic and Roy, regardless of who you root for.

This iPhone slapshot should lead the NHL to partner with Apple to make the iPuck. Include inside a hi def camera (or two), plus a sensor to know where the puck is on the ice (did it cross the goal line, ask the puck).
      • AidanB 3 months ago
And if the sensor failed, they could use the puck to phone Toronto…

Only if you can play angry birds on it

Canucks fans will only start moaning when it's announced that Winnipeg's opponent is the Montreal Canadiens.

Its really no interest to us at all. Outdoor games have lost their novelty. Unless the Canucks are playing i really dont care if they have an outdoor game or not. No eastern bias conspiracy, just dont care. Now Winterpeggers better be careful or the Red Wings fans will just complain about what time the game starts and if they have to stay up till 9 pm to watch their team.

I actually enjoy the games mostly because they have been competitive. That's all I care about is a good game on a big stage.
      • AidanB 3 months ago
I'd like to see the Canucks in an outdoor game, though preferably with more of a rival (although I guess the Ladd/Buff rivalry with Winnipeg is intact). I don't have any illusions about BC Place as a suitable "outdoor" venue, though.

An American with health insurance that conveniently does not cover treatment? Shocking. That poor girl. I wonder what Tim Thomas would say about THAT.
    • DaveGeek  •  3 months ago
Thankfully it wasn't the Smokies who gave the Vees their victory.

      Marc-Andre Fleury/Devils = SI/Reliable Sports Magazine

Ouch, several Blurays but no PS3 games...

Now shoot that Iphone against the boards, then if it still works, I'll consider buying the case. People don't realize the impact from a puck hitting the boards is WAY harder then the stick hitting the puck on the initial shot.

I like how a professional site like Sports Illustrated would say this:

      "Henrik Lundqvist, Rangers 28%
      Pekka Rinne, Predators 28%
      Marc-Andre Fleury, Devils 8%
      Ryan Miller, Sabres 7%
      Tim Thomas, Bruins 5%"

I would bold the error if I could, but you should be able to find it yourself.

The Devils moved to Pittsburgh?? That sucks.

    • Barney  •  3 months ago
Mr. Mooney, you obviously don't know S#@t from Shineola when it comes to Chicago Hockey so why don't you give you mouth a rest and stand up and take some pressure off of your brain!

I see Winnipeg and Minnesota for a Heritage Classic.
      • AidanB 3 months ago
Not a chance. Heritage Classic is a CBC property. You're getting an All-Canadian matchup.
    • MattD  •  3 months ago
Just to set the record straight, I claim to be the originator of the term "east coast bias" based on my posts in this here blog over two years ago.

Shouldn't Winnipeg be required to have some form of Hockey Heritage in order to host the Heritage Classic?
