When P.K. Subban appeared after his arbitration hearing with the Montreal Canadiens, there was concern that the process had kicked him in the stomach. He looked down, weary and pessimistic in front of cameras.

“I don’t know what people expect. The moment that I’m not kissing reporters, everyone thinks there's something’s wrong,” said Subban, on the Marek Vs. Wyshynski podcast on Monday. “I got up at 6 in the morning, and I was in an arbitration for four hours. I was probably a little bit tired.”

Subban eventually signed a blockbuster 8-year contract worth $9 million per season.

“At the end of the day, the important thing is that we both wanted a long term deal,” he said. “The details of the process are irrelevant now.”

Here’s our full interview with Subban, touched on several topics about his contract and his life:

We asked Subban about two of the summer’s oddest controversies as well. First, the fact that his brother Malcolm Subban, a goalie in the Boston Bruins system, said he was rooting for P.K. in Montreal’s series against the Bruins, catching some heat from the locals in doing so.

“I don't think Malcolm really cares,” said P.K. Subban.

“If you’re not going to cheer for your brother in the playoffs, I don’t know who you’re supposed to cheer for,” he said of his brother. “We all support each other. But I’m sure if he was playing against me, he wouldn’t want me to do well.”

Then there was the stunt in which Subban appeared to drink from a faux Stanley Cup on stage with Seth Rogen – using a straw.

“As I was walking out on the stage, they gave me the two pitchers of beer and there were straws on the tray,” he said. “Whether it’s a fake Cup or a real Cup, I never touched it.”

He also said he never inhaled.

“It wasn’t Molson beer. That’s the only beer I drink.”
