Jared Boll to have DoPS hearing for late hit on Flyers' Bellemare

Jared Boll will have a hearing with the NHL’s Department of Player Safety on Thursday after his hit on Pierre-Edouard Bellemare of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Boll was given a five-minute major and game misconduct, much to the displeasure of Blue Jackets head coach John Tortorella who believed the call should have been an interference minor.

Via Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch:

“That’s a good check. You don’t want to see anybody hurt, but that’s not a head shot. I thought it should have been 2 minutes. Quite honestly, Gudas sucker punched Boll and gets nothing. The refs thought they got it right.”

Tortorella went on to say he’s disappointed in today’s “conservative” game where a big hit leads to punishment.

There was no head contact, but the hit was certainly very late. We’ve already seen three suspensions this season (Max Talbot, Tyson Barrie, Raffir Torres) for interference, and there’s a good chance here for a fourth. Boll is in repeat offender territory after serving a three-game ban last March for an illegal check to the head, so that won’t help his cause either.
