Despite absent big names, NHL All-Star Game matches last season’s ratings

Former Degrassi alumnus DrakeThe NHL All-Star Game Fantasy Draft saw its ratings plummet last week. While a shift to Thursday and a more competitive night on TV was the most obvious cause, the absence of several stars — Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Nicklas Lidstrom, Teemu Selanne — in a star-driven event was thought to have some impact as well.

Or maybe not. Without those big names, the NHL All-Star Game still managed to maintain its ratings from last season. From Steve Lepore of Puck The Media:

The game drew a 1.0 overnight rating on the NBC Sports Network. This was even with the number that VERSUS drew for last year's All-Star Game in Raleigh.

In addition, it was (as last year's) up 22% from the game in 2009 at Montreal, the last time the All-Star Game was held in Canada. The All-Star Game was not held in 2010 due to the Olympics.

No word on the Canadian numbers yet.

Point of reference here: The NBA All-Star Game did a 6.2 overnight on TNT last season. But hey: Just as many people call hockey their favorite sports as pro basketball; so we've got that going for us, which is nice.

But here's the takeaway from the NHL All-Star Game's consistent ratings: It's a good sign for the League. Via the Toronto Star story before Sunday's event, on how the NHL is marketing events rather than stars:

Now the NHL follows a different path, one forged by the NFL, the behemoth when it comes to sports marketing. Instead of focusing on stars, it focuses on the game, the event. Brett Favre retired. Peyton Manning missed the season. But no one is bigger than the game.

To some, evidence suggests the NHL is maturing.

"Think of the NHL 20 years ago as a brand and think of them today. They've done a pretty good job," says Norman O'Reilly, associate professor of sport business at the University of Ottawa. "Take TV at the all-star game. It would be naïve to say the loss of Crosby and Ovechkin doesn't hurt (but) you'll probably see ratings that are as good as last year. That's evidence of success in marketing."

And, of course, The Drake Effect.

Skills competition is more fun than the All-Star "Game".

Hope the NHL hires more former teen sitcoms stars like the entire cast of California Dreams and Blossom.

I lasted about 4 seconds of the Drake "performance" before I muted my TV and wondered off until he was finished.

Given the selection of other Canadian artists that were probably available, I'm OK with the NHL going with Drake.

If this game can match last year's ratings without Crosby or Ovechkin, then maybe the NHL should relize that it's time to stop promoting the game as if there were only two players.

Out of all the All Star games in the 4 major sports, the NHL one has to be the best

I love hockey and the NHL, but could not get into this game. I found it hard to root for either team, and Jermeny Ronieck's color commentating got annoying.

The fantasy draft is ok in my opinion, it's no worse than what it was before. you can hype it up and flash it up before and after the all star game but at the end of the day, the game itself is what needs to change. it's just not a competitive game and the only reason to watch is to see some nice goals and saves. but when the D is just standing there and goalies are being cautious and making stupid plays (Thomas) it detracts from the highlights as well. give them incentive like the MLB did if you want to get bigger numbers for the Game.

I just watched the AHL all star game and it was a more competitive and entertaining "HOCKEY GAME" than the NHL game was to watch.

Hip hop and hockey don't mix. "Street puck" in South Central only exists in Mighty Ducks movies.

why not? Cause only white people like ice hockey? Drake grew up with hockey!

Is it really fair to compare something that is on NBC Sports Network to something on TNT? I know I personally do not have NBC Sports Network in my cable package so I had to watch an online stream.

The game is hard to watch....in fact all All Star games are pointless. I find the Draft and the Skills Competition somewhat interesting, however. If only they could bring back the days when the NHL Stars would play the Russians. That was absolutely awesome!

Of course the ratings dropped. The ratings were so high last year because the format was new. That is why people watched last year. People didn't watch this year because they don't care. I didn't care last year (as I am sure other did also) but I watched because I was curious.

      Look on the bright side....

At least the NHL didn't hire an aging, slutty has-been in her 50's to belch out "Like a Virgin".

It's hard to compare the NBA All Star game with the NHL All Star game. There's just as much defense in a regular season NBA game as their All Star game.

It should be called the All-Star Skills
