Alexander Radulov hits his coach with his hockey stick (Video)

It doesn't take much for a Russian player to earn the label "enigmatic". It's an unfair stereotype, in my opinion, borne largely on the basis of one or two high-profile characters earning the descriptor. One such character is Alexander Radulov.

Already this season there have been reports of conflict with Salavat Yulaev head coach Sergei Mikhalev, such as when he tweeted that the man was getting on his nerves, but player/coach conflicts have happened before. It's stuff like this that gets people calling you enigmatic:

Seriously, who does that? And on the backhand, no less? That's just rude.

It's worth noting that this isn't the same head coach Radulov tweeted about. This is Ilari Näckel, the team's goaltending coach. Sergei Mikhalev is no longer with the team -- he was fired in November. Still, it's not hard to look at this video, consider the perpetrator, and wonder if this was an intentional thwack.

But, having never seen another player turn around and bludgeon his coach with his stick and believing very strongly in the goodness of people, part of me wonders if this was an accident.

Did Radulov just turn around too quickly or maybe lose his bearings for a second? Or is he really a crazy dude that could bean his coach with a hockey stick at any moment? I put this to you, the reader. What gives?

s/t to our own Dmitri Chesnokov (@dchenokov) for the tip.

It's obvious that he hits his coach intentionally, and then realizes that was really dumb, and puts up a quick hand just so he doesn't have to man up to his actions.

Glad this trash isn't in the NHL. I'd love to see him try that with Torts

I am also glad he isn't in the NHL but a little bit of me wishes he was. Someone like him needs to be taught a lesson. Rumour has it he's going to be heading to the NHL next year and I hope he watches his stick before he swings it. Because in the NHL people like Konopka, Prust, Jackman, Boll, and Thornton don't take to kindly to that kind of nonsense and would enjoy teaching a young kid a lesson. Plus if he tried that on Torts, it would be a sad sad day to see Torts go to jail.

I have to agree that he does it on purpose. He looked at coach twice, swings stick and hits him in the neck/jaw, then waves his hand like he is sorry!!! Give me a break. Radulov is steamed about something. Look how he rocks back and forth after the incident. For some reason the guy next to him smirks.......weird stuff....I agree with a previous comment.........I'd love to see him try it with Torts.....lol. I'm just glad they have it on video cause it sure belittles the guy! I'm glad Phoenix had the guts to suspend him for a game and even had the balls to keep him off the roster for the next game.

This guy might have all the talent in the world but he's an #$%$ and should have been banned for the rest the year. #$%$!?!? He 100% went at the coach and held back just enough to avoid making it real bad. Nonetheless, it's brutal. Can you imagine Crosby or Datsyuk doing that? No class at all.

        crosby yes dats never

Lol...yeah, ok. Crosby might be a bit "sookie" once in a while but.....not even worth finishing.

How could you even gather that it was an accident? Unless you were writing to get a response...

      Looked pretty intentional to me.

Actually, I changed my mind. I think it was an accident. Look how he puts his hand up and the coach is like, eh, whatever.

      Definitely not an accident

I'll go with the latter of the two and say he's a crazy dude that could bean his coach with a hockey stick at any moment. He looked back twice before whacking the coach with a whole lot of momentum on his stick. What I find funny is that the coach barely flinched.

Apparently no one (even the coach who got hit) cares though...

how much restraint did it take for the coach not to falcon punch him in the back of the head

Reputation or not, a hockey player at that skill level does not do that accidentally.

I don't understand what is happening in that video. It is super disturbing though. Is he just like a teenager going through puberty who cannot handle his pent up frustration and emotion?
