Steven Tyler’s scarf better than ‘Star-Spangled Banner’ rendition

Steven Tyler, lead singer of the Boston-based, Hall-of-Fame rock and roll band Aerosmith and an "American Idol" judge, was brought in to sing the national anthem before kickoff of the New England Patriots AFC championship game at home. Well, sing is an overstatement.

It was more of a warbled scream. Associated Press is saying that it would not get him to Hollywood, while Deadspin called it one of the worst anthems of all time. Radar gave him credit for getting all the words right, but that's about it. Sports Grid asked, "How is this guy supposed to pass as a judge on a singing competition when he does… this?" The Boston Herald was one of the few voices to defend Tyler, calling the performance, "pretty decent."

At least he did wear the best scarf in the history of scarves. Pageant queens everywhere now know why there is a worldwide shortage on sequins.

The only thing wrong with it was it was missing Joe Perry on guitar.

He was in tune, he sang it like he sings in concert and on their recordings. He is in his 60's which is incredible for an artist that has been doing rock & roll for decades. This is his style. I am sure HE DIDN'T INVITE HIMSELF. And believe me, there have been alot worse. I am not a Steven fan, but I am fair-minded.

AMEN!!@ Oddly Enough/ norwalk, Ohio, you are completely right :)

I agree with Oddly enough. He got the lyrics right, stayed on tune and only screamed on the highest notes which is the way he always hits his high notes. I'm not a Tyler fan either, just like music. What I don't like is the singers that take the melody all over the place. You shouldn't rewrite the Star Spangled Banner.

Better than a lot of renditions I've seen the past few years. Not bad for an aging rocker. It was raw, real, and seemed from the heart. Let's not tear it apart!

Hey. At least he tried to be respectful and probably did his best. I think he has grown up alot in the past few years and his heart was at least in the right place. I think the worst I ever heard and felt totally insulted as an American was when Roseanne sang...Now that was disgusting. If I was her I would be begging forgiveness to the whole country for the rest of her life...so many years later and I am still upset and so is everyone else who remembers it.

And Roseanne regrets it to this day !

Grown up? He's like 64 years old!

I think Roseanne's rendition was pretty hilarious.

I'm not a huge football fan, but I'm a huge fan of our National Anthem. I thought it was on key, "rocker-style", and quite well done. Kind of sums up our Country- Many different Peoples, One beloved Country- nice. You rocked, Mr. Tyler!

So? No one ever said Tyler had the best voice on earth to begin with...I always was an Aerosmith fan but rockers don't "sing" they scream...that being said, at least he didnt' fill it up with a bunch of "soul" runs and he knew the freakin' words!

It was heartfelt, what really bothers me is when the National Anthem is being sung, alot of players and people don't have thier hands over their hearts.....WTH!

The media should write about all the other idiots that have sang the Star-Spangled Banner in a way that is disgusting and unprofessional. In 25 years if he sings it again, it will be the same because this is the way he sings and is not to change it for you or anybody else. God bless you Steven.
