Sue Paterno hospitalized after fall on Penn State campus

Sue Paterno, the widow of the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, was hospitalized after a fall on Penn State’s campus Thursday.

Paterno family spokesperson Dan McGinn told StateCollege.com that she was hospitalized for observation on Thursday and fell en route to a memorial service. She was scheduled to read the eulogy at the funeral of retired Marine Col. Gerald S. Russell, a former associate dean at Penn State who died on February 24 at the age of 97.

“She is in good spirits and expects to be released in a day or so,” McGinn said in an email. “Her attitude and resolve are great.”

Penn State trustee Ryan McCombie reportedly read the eulogy in Paterno’s place and “told mourners that (she) suffered a broken pelvis after falling.”

The 74-year-old Paterno and Russell were close friends through their work with the Pennsylvania Special Olympics.
