A contributor to Oklahoma’s secondary won’t return for the 2016 season.

Sooners head coach Bob Stoops told reporters Monday that safety Hatari Byrd has been dismissed from the program for violating team rules. Byrd is entering his senior season and has not used his redshirt.

“He’ll (transfer) with our blessing and make somebody a good hand,” Stoops said per The Oklahoman.

Byrd played in 12 games for the Sooners in 2015, including two starts, and finished with 29 tackles. Byrd also had 17 tackles and a forced fumble in 2014 and three tackles in 2013 as a true freshman.

Byrd had a controversial incident after the Sooners beat Tennessee last season. He was seen making an obscene gesture toward Vols fans while walking off the field at Neyland Stadium. Byrd later apologized.

Additionally, Byrd was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and alcohol by a minor in January 2015.
