Mark Richt to have offseason hip replacement surgery courtesy of a swinging accident and P90x

There's something about SEC coaches and hip injuries.

First, Tennessee coach Derek Dooley suffered one and had to have mid-season hip surgery — he's been coaching from a golf cart and walking with a cane — and now Georgia coach Mark Richt confesses that he also has to have hip surgery from an injury that happened in the early '90s.

Thanks to some intrepid reporting from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, we now know the sordid details that led to Richt's injury and it involves a swing set and Richt trying to show off for his wife Katharyn.

"I was trying to show her what a good swinger I was," Richt said.

(Get your minds out of the gutter people)

"I was swinging really high on a big heavy swing set with those big heavy chains. Sometimes if you go super high, on the way back you get a little bit of that lag. You've got those big S-hooks on top, and you're swinging, and I swung enough to where the one on the left came out. So it comes out, but I didn't know. I'm still on the swing. So when I come back down, the chain on [on the right] stayed taut and the other one just goes. I turned sideways and the first thing that hits the ground is my left hip. Just smashed it.

"It was traumatic. I mean, when I hit I was like, 'I think I broke it.' I couldn't hardly breathe. Sometimes with an injury like that you get a full-body sweat and a little nauseous. But the pain kind of went away and I went about my business, until about a year and a half ago."

While this does sound horrible, I'd be lying if I didn't laugh when I first read it. Of all the ways to bust your ass, doing so on a children's swing set isn't that uncommon, it's just ridiculous.

But it didn't stop there. No, Richt recently reinjured his hip courtesy of famed exercise guru Tony Horton.

"P90x," Richt said, referencing the popular DVD workout. "I thought I just had a hip-flexor injury. But I said if I quit now I'm just going to get fat. So I just kept doing it."

And now Richt needs a new hip and perhaps one of those Life Alert necklaces to go with it (Richt's fallen, and he can't get up).

He tried not to tell anyone even though the pain was excruciating, but finally had to fess up to athletic director Greg McGarity, who was trying to schedule a postseason meeting.

Richt will have offseason hip replacement surgery and should be as good as new in the fall. In the spring, however, we'll be looking for those photos of Richt cruising the sidelines on a Rascal.
