Florida State honors scholarship of commit who had to stop playing
Richy Klepal's football career might have ended prematurely, but it's not going to cost him his college education.
Klepal, a four-star offensive lineman from Tampa (Fla.) Plant, committed to Florida State, but a few weeks ago he suffered his fifth concussion and decided -- after having an MRI and speaking with doctors -- to end football his career.
"I got an MRI and it showed that I have a hemorrhage in my brain," Klepal said. "The MRI was an optional thing. I just thought that since I had five [concussions], it would be a good time to get it. If I hadn't gotten it, it could have been a month, and I could have passed my impact test and been back out there. God forbid, if something could have happened, I could have been out there laying on the field dead."
Despite the injury, Klepal said Florida State coaches called him and said they would honor his scholarship so Klepal could still get his education. Klepal will meet with Florida State coaches on Monday to discuss the situation.
It was a relief for Klepal, who said that any sort of impact to his head could have resulted in death.
"I love football, but not more than living," said Klepal.
